How to Make Your Android Battery Last Longer and Slow Battery Aging

We all can relate that atimes when you leave your home in the morning with a full battery, but before afternoon the battery bar is already flashing red. You start running helther skelther looking for where to charge your phone or you start begging strangers to lend you a powerbank. A lot of Android users are on this table. 

Batteries age naturally, but your habits make them age faster. Hidden settings and background apps cause most problems. 

In this guide I am going to outline 10 habits that make your Android phone's battery drain quicker, which in turn makes it age faster, what to do to stop the quick drain/aging and how to do it.... 

In one of my previous articles I explained about the 20 to 80 charging rule. Here is a quick recap, always have this rule at the back of your mind. 

The 20 to 80 Charging Rule

Charging to 100 percent every time wears out lithium batteries faster.

  • 0 to 20 percent (red zone): Deep discharge stresses battery cells.
  • 20 to 80 percent (green zone): Best range for long battery health.
  • 80 to 100 percent (yellow zone): High voltage speeds up battery wear.

Unplugging around 80 percent during the day helps the battery last longer.

10 Practical Ways to Save Battery

1. Adjust Screen Settings

The display screen uses the most power. This is the biggest power user. Using your phone at maximum brightness and a super-smooth 120Hz refresh rate are the major battery drains.

  • Enable Adaptive/auto Brightness. 
  •  If your phone supports this feature, reduce refresh rate to 60Hz in your settings unless you really really need the extra smoothness. 

2. Remove Live Wallpapers

Live/animated wallpapers and widgets like news and weather work in the background and drain power all day. 

  • Use a static wallpaper.
  • Remove unused widgets.

3. Put Unused Apps to Sleep

Some apps like social media and email apps like to run in the background, syncing and notifying. 

  • Open Battery settings.
  • Restrict background activity for apps you don’t need constant updates from.

4. Check Battery Usage

Apps with bugs drain power fast. Sometimes an app bugs out and gets stuck in a loop,draining power without you even opening it. 

  • Check battery usage list.
  • Check Settings > Battery. Look for apps showing high usage which you didn’t actively use. 
  • Force stop or reinstall the suspicious app..

5. Control App Updates

Background updates drain battery. Letting the Play Store auto-update apps anytime can lead to battery drain. 

  • In the Play Store settings, set auto-updates to “Wi-Fi only” or "never auto update" so you control when updates happen.
  • Update apps while charging.

6. Manage Network Connections

Poor signal increases power use. In areas with poor network service, your phone works overtime to find a connection. Likewise, leaving Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning on all the time adds to battery drain.

  • Use Airplane Mode in dead zones to stop the search.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning.

7. Reduce Sync Frequency

Constant syncing drains power. Having every account set to“push” email means constant data checks. 

  • For less urgent accounts, change the sync setting to “fetch” every 30 or 60 minutes to give your phone a break.

8. Limit Location Access

GPS uses heavy power. It is power-hungry, and many apps request your location more than they need to.

  • Under Settings > Location > App permissions, set most apps to “Allow only while using the app.”

9. Disable Always Listening Features

Voice assistants stay active. Keeping“Hey Google” active means the microphone is always on standby.

  • Disable the voice wake-up feature. You can still manually launch Google Assistant when you need it.

10. Keep the Phone Cool

Heat damages batteries quickly. It is a battery’s worst enemy. Extreme cold is not good either.

  • Avoid hot environments.
  • Try to keep your phone out of direct sunlight and away from freezing temperatures. 
  • If it feels hot, take off the case and pause heavy tasks.

Is charging overnight bad?

While phones are designed to prevent overcharging, leaving your battery at 100% for long hours is not ideal for long-term health. Charging within the 20-80% range is better when possible.

Should I drain the battery fully before charging?

No. That was for old battery types. For today’s lithium-ion batteries, it’s actually harmful. Avoid letting it drop below 20% regularly.

Does fast charging damage batteries?

It creates more heat, which can contribute to battery wear over time. Using a standard charger when you’re not in a hurry is a better option. 

Do battery saver modes really help?

Absolutely. They work by reducing background activity, limiting performance, and toning down screen brightness to squeeze out more life from your battery when you are running low.


How do I know when to replace the battery?

Look for signs like the phone dying suddenly at 20% or 30%, or barely lasting a few hours after a full charge despite all your efforts. You definitely need a replacement if the battery is swollen. 

Some phones have a battery health check in the settings, you can determine the health of your battery from there.

​If you use solar panels to charge your devices while traveling or outdoors, avoid plugging your phone directly into the panel. Solar energy can be inconsistent; every time a cloud passes by, the voltage fluctuations can stress your phone’s battery controller. More importantly, solar panels require direct sunlight, and heat is a silent killer for smartphones.  

Safe Method: Plug a power bank into the solar panel instead. Let the power bank take the heat and the inconsistent energy flow throughout the day. Once the power bank is charged, use it to charge your phone later in a cool, shaded environment. This keeps your phone’s battery safe from extreme heat and ensures a steady, regulated charge.


Gaining more hours back on your battery comes down to two things: how you charge your phone and how you fine-tune your settings. Start with the 20-80% rule as your step, then tackle the top drains using the guidelines above. If you follow the guidelines you will spend less time looking for where to charge your phone and spend more time actually using your phone.
